I’ve always loved and admired luxury handbags, but I never had one of my own until last year when I bought myself the Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM for my 30th birthday. #treatyoself I decided to put together this Louis Vuitton Neverfull review to provide some (hopefully) helpful insight to anyone who has had their eye on the classic LV Neverfull.
If you are anything like me, before you make a big purchase (or investment, as I like to call it), you are going to do some research and I did a LOT of research. I watched hours of YouTube videos, read tons of blogger reviews, and stalked all LV hashtags on the ‘gram before I waltzed into the Louis Vuitton store (sweating) to purchase my Neverfull.
The Louis Vuitton Neverfull was introduced in 2007 and it has become one of LV’s most classic and iconic bags. This tote-style handbag comes in three sizes: the PM (small), the MM (medium), and the GM (large).
The Neverfull comes in a variety of styles and designs with the main three being the brown-checked Damier Ebene canvas, the white-checked Damier Azure canvas, and the Monogram canvas. Although LV introduces different colored interiors for the Neverfull from time to time, typically the Damier Ebene comes with a red interior, the Damier Azure comes with a tan or light pink interior, and the Monogram comes with a tan or fuchsia interior. Both the Damier Azure and Monogram Neverfulls come with a natural (untreated) cowhide leather trim and handles, while the Damier Ebene comes with a coated leather trim and handles.
The bag features gold-plated hardware on both the interior and exterior and the textile-lined interior is one open space with a large zipper pocket on the side. The bag does not have a zipper closure, but it does have a small gold-plated hook to clip the sides of the bag together. Each Neverfull now comes with a detachable zipper pouch that you can either use in the bag or totally separate as a clutch.
When it comes to LV price tags, yikes… yeah, girl, it’s gonna cost ya. But like I said, I like to think of it as an investment. That is the reason I spent months researching this dang bag! And luxury prices will only continue to go up because Louis Vuitton, like many other luxury designers, increases their prices each year. This is why LV items have such great resale value. You can buy a bag today and sell it for the price you bought it for or more in a few years (as long as you take great care of it). See, Louis Vuitton bags really are an investment… What did Carrie Bradshaw say? “I like to keep my money where I can see it… hanging in my closest.” 🙂
Size and Use
For my first Louis Vuitton bag, I wanted a bag that I could really USE. I was looking for a bag that I could take to work everyday and to me, a tote bag is essential for work (you can check out some of my other Business Style Essentials HERE). Because I commute to work via public transit, I needed a bag big enough to carry everything from my laptop to my lunch to an extra pair of shoes. My Longchamp Le Pliage tote was just not cutting it anymore. This is why I went with the GM size Neverfull, as the MM size was comparable to my Le Pliage. Now, the GM size is kind of enormous, but for my needs, it’s perfect. I’m 5’6” and it does look big on me, but I love the look of the oversized tote.
Also, you can cinch in the sides on all of the Neverfulls to give the bag a totally different, more compact look. I sometimes cinch in the sides on the weekends or anytime I’m not carrying all of my extra work things. If you live close to a Louis Vuitton store, I recommend going into the store and trying on the different size bags to see which you like best.
I know some people don’t like the idea of this bag not having a zipper closure, but this does not bother me at all, as I usually don’t zip up my tote bags anyway. The zipper compartment on the inside of the bag is big enough for a wallet and your phone so if you are worried about someone reaching into your bag, you can store a good number of items in the zipper pocket or even in the zipper pouch that can be attached to the inside of the bag.
Canvas and Leather
When it came to deciding which canvas I wanted, I went back and forth between the Damier Ebene and the Monogram for quite a while before I decided on the Monogram. I’ve always loved the look of the Monogram, but I wanted a bag that was worry-free and the untreated vachetta leather on the Monogram bag gave me anxiety.
Because the leather is untreated on the Monogram bag, it’s more susceptible to getting stained by water (rain) and the oils from your skin. If you’ve ever seen an older Louis Vuitton bag with vachetta leather, you’ll notice how dark the leather looks. This is because the leather has patina-ed (aged) over time. The aging of the leather doesn’t bother me, I like that classic LV look, but I was worried about buying a high maintenance everyday bag when it seems to rain so often here in Pittsburgh.
I’ve been caught in the rain a few times with my bag, but I always carry an umbrella so I’ve kept it fairly protected. I have gotten a few water spots on the vachetta due to random windy down-pours, but they’re not super noticeable. If it’s down-pouring when I’m getting ready to leave my house, I’ll switch out my bag for a more care-free tote.
I originally wanted the classic tan interior, but when I went to the Louis Vuitton store to purchase my bag, they only had the Pivone (fuchsia) interior available in the GM size and I LOVED it when I saw it in person. This is why I, again, highly recommend going to the store to look at the bag before you buy it. I didn’t initially love the Pivone interior when I was looking online, but when I saw it in person, I instantly fell in love and I am so happy I have a pop of color in my bag. I also feel that the Pivone interior may show less dirt than the tan interior.
Overall, I LOVE my Neverfull GM. I love the style of the bag, I love the size of the bag, and I love how durable this bag is (I read somewhere that it could hold up to 200 lbs?!). This bag can fit all of my work essentials and then some (it really is never full). It is the perfect everyday tote and it is also a great for travel! It is so versatile and classic and the price point is great (for LV) considering how much bag you get for your buck. Plus, I love the pouch that it comes with – I use it by itself as a clutch all the time!
- Classic and iconic bag
- Spacious tote that can literally fit everything
- Perfect for work and travel
- Great price point for a luxury bag
- Comes with a zipper pouch/clutch
- The only thing I would consider a con is the high maintenance aspect of the bags with the vachetta leather. If you are worried about getting water/oil marks on the vachetta, the Damier Ebene Neverfull is going to be the best option for you.
Additionally, I recommend purchasing a bag organizer for your Neverfull, especially if you are using it for work or travel. I use my bag organizer for work and then on the weekends, I take it out and just throw my handbag essentials into my Neverfull and go. The bag organizer gives the Neverfull a more structured look and helps keep my things organized. I ordered a size down in my bag organizer because I still wanted to be able to cinch in the sides of the bag with the organizer in it. You can check out my bag organizer in my What’s In My Bag IGTV video HERE.
If you are lusting after this bag, but don’t want to pay the full retail price for a brand-new bag, there are TONS of gorgeous pre-loved Neverfulls available on sites like Fashionphile.
Whew! I think that covers everything! If you are still reading at this point, you are serious about purchasing a Neverfull and I say go for it, girlfriend! I love my Neverfull and I am so happy I took the plunge into Louis Vuitton. The price tag is high, but the quality is incredible, the style is classic, and this is truly a timeless bag that you can use for years and years to come.
